Here Are the Basics on Passivhaus

first_imgThe North American Passive House Network has published an e-book explaining the basics of Passivhaus and net-zero-energy construction techniques. It’s a free download.Net Zero Energy Buildings: Passive House + Renewables makes the case that with very low air infiltration rates and lots of insulation, Passivhaus buildings are natural candidates for net-zero-energy operation with the incorporation of some renewable energy. The book, written by Mary James of Low Carbon Productions, explains the fundamentals of Passivhaus structures: high levels of insulation, thermally insulated window frames with high-quality glazing, techniques that minimize thermal bridging, low rates of air leakage, and mechanical ventilation systems.A section called “Leading Regions” tours areas where Passivhaus construction has been particularly successful. They include parts of Europe, Canada, and both New York and San Francisco.Individual projects are showcased in a section called “Beacons.” Each description offers a summary of the project along with a spec box detailing predicted heating and cooling energy, square footage, and air leakage. You’ll get the very basics of construction, but no detailed descriptions or drawings. However, links at the bottom of each description will take readers to one or more web sites where more information may be available — for example, web sites maintained by project architects or renewable energy system contractors who worked on the projects. There are examples of both new construction and retrofits, single-family and multifamily. Profiled projects come from all over the country.last_img read more

FCC Muddles Its Way Toward Net-Neutrality Rules

first_imgdan rowinski Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement The Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technology Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech …center_img Related Posts FCC chairman Tom WheelerThe Federal Communications Commission today approved a proposal for Internet regulation that would allow cable and telecom companies to charge service providers like Netflix for “fast lane” access to consumers, although it is also seeking comment on whether to restrain or prohibit the practice before its rules are made final. Some commission officials, including chairman Tom Wheeler, said they opposed the idea of fast lanes even as they approved a proposal that would allow them.See also: FCC Shifting Gears On Its Internet “Fast Lane” IdeaThe result is a muddle in the fight over net neutrality, the principle that Internet service providers shouldn’t play favorites among the traffic they’re delivering to home and business users. Net neutrality has been a hot issue since a federal court struck down the FCC’s earlier rules on the subject in January. The FCC vote effectively lays the groundwork for creating new net-neutrality regulation.“There is one Internet. It must be fast, robust and it must be open,” Wheeler said. “The prospect of a gate keeper choosing winners and losers on the Internet is unacceptable…. I will not allow the national asset of an open Internet to be compromised.”The vote from the five-commissioner committee was carried with three votes from Democrat party commissioners (Jessica Rosenworcel and Mignon Clyburn) including chairman Wheeler and was opposed by the two sitting Republicans (Aji Pai and Michael O’Rielly). The vote for proposed rulemaking does not mean that that net neutrality regulation has been passed by the FCC. Today’s vote starts a process where the Commission will publish a proposal (likely to come this afternoon) that will be open to public comment until the middle of July.See also: Net Neutrality: What Happens Now That Verizon Has Vanquished The FCCThe major issues facing net neutrality in the FCC are whether or not to reclassify wireline and wireless broadband services as public utilities under Title II “common carrier” provision of the Communications Act of 1934. The FCC is also attempting to discern what regulatory power it has under Section 706 of the Telecommunications Act of 1996. Wheeler made clear in his statements during the FCC’s open meeting today that he would oppose “paid prioritization” of Internet traffic that would allow the broadband providers to charge Internet services more for faster broadband speeds. Wheeler specifically mentioned video-streaming website Netflix in his statements while Commissioners Clyburn and Rosenworcel mentioned other industries like healthcare and education. On the flip side, Commissioners Pai and O’Rielly said that it was not the FCC’s place to regulate the Internet and wanted to slow down or eliminate the entire open Internet process in favor of the current legal framework.  Tags:#broadband#Carriers#FCC#FCC chairman#net neutrality#open internet#open internet order#operators#telecommunications last_img read more

Moudgil, Chandela secure Olympic quotas at World Championship

first_img(Eds: Updating with more results and details) Changwon, Sep 3 (PTI) Anjum Moudgil and Apurvi Chandela became the first set of Indian shooters to secure quota places for the 2020 Olympics by winning a silver and finishing fourth respectively in the women’s 10m air rifle event of the ISSF World Championship here Monday. Moudgil finished second on the podium behind Korean Hana Im (251.1) and ahead of bronze-medallist Eunhea Jung (228.0), who is also from Korea. The 24-year-old Moudgil shot a total of 248.4 in the eight-women final to open the Indian senior squad’s medal account in the prestigious tournament. While the equally talented Chandela aggregated 207 to finish fourth but still made the cut since a country can avail two Olympic quota places in this event. The International Shooting Sport Federation’s (ISSF) premier tournament assumes added significance as it is the first Olympic quota event for the Tokyo Games, offering as many as 60 berths across 15 events. Both Moudgil and Chandela’s sequence of scores in the finals included quite a few high 10s, an indication that the two were shooting well. Earlier in the qualifications, Moudgil and Chandela finished fourth and sixth respectively. Though the two shooters have secured quotas, as per the stated policy, the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) will take the final call on selection, based on the aggregate scores of shooters (in international tournaments and selection trials) leading up to the Olympic Games. In the men’s 10m air rifle event, Asian Games medallist Deepak Kumar cleared the qualification but finished sixth in the highly competitive final which was dominated by Russia and Croatia.advertisement India had on Sunday bagged two medals in the junior events, even as the seniors failed to make the finals of mixed events in 10m air rifle and air pistol. The junior events are not offering quotas. PTI AH PM ATKATKlast_img read more

Over Governors Objection State Votes to Purchase Leased Space for Team Orlando

first_img Dan Cohen AUTHOR The Florida Cabinet on Tuesday voted to purchase almost 10 acres of land in central Florida that hosts a number of DOD tenants primarily focused on simulation. The purchase would allow DOD to reduce its leasing expense for Team Orlando as part of a state-led effort to retain Orlando’s defense simulation cluster in the event of a new BRAC round. DOD pays about $5.4 million annually in rent for 200,000 square feet of commercial space in Orlando.“In this current budget environment, that’s a terrible place to be,” Thomas Baptiste, president of the National Center for Simulation, told News4Jax.Last year, Baptiste told the Central Florida Partnership that he fears DOD could end its leases in Orlando and move to other federal or military sites that have spare capacity.“I’m going to tell you today, there will be another round of BRAC. As the other services get smaller, there are empty federal buildings all over this nation that could house pieces and parts of Team Orlando, and undermine the fabric that drives this $5 billion industry,” Baptiste said at the time. The Florida Defense Support Task Force has made moving DOD tenants into government-rate leases a top priority. The purchase would add 9.58 acres to the Central Florida Research Park, which sits next to the University of Central Florida campus and Naval Support Activity Orlando.Gov. Rick Scott (R) voted against the purchase, based on his opposition to the $13.9 million purchase price and not the effort’s objective, according to the story.last_img read more

Two decades of a Mistresspiece

first_imgRoughly 21 years back, a younger Nasreen had written, ‘In the name of religion, there has been bloodshed, disturbance and persecution.’ It was then, in 1993, that her celebrated novel Lajja was first published in Bengali. Bangladesh banned it soon after, condemning her to an exile that she has been fighting ever since. It’s been 20 years of Lajja, and Nasreen’s struggle for survival – literary, political, womanly. Marking the 20th anniversary of this seminal text, a fresh translation into English has been published by Penguin recently. Nasreen, who lives in South Delhi and often spends her evenings buying fish from Chittaranjan Park, couldn’t be happier. Her visa has been recently extended by the Indian government for another year. It’s a permanent battle as far as her domicile is concerned, but she’s not afraid to wage it. Bengal is out of bounds: fanatics want her head. But in the relative secular seclusion of South Delhi, Nasreen drowns her sorrows in a late night peg, snuggling along her cat Minoo. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’Lajja came right in the heels of Babri Masjid demolition in Ayodhya. On 6 December 1992, RSS karsevaks brought down the 500-year-old mosque in the contested Ram Janmabhoomi, and the shadow of that historic tragedy fell on neighbouring Bangladesh. Lajja charted how the raging fire of communal anger swept through Dhaka as a Hindu family bore the brunt of the manic event. Translated by activist-turned-writer Anchita Ghatak, the new edition comes with updates. ‘This is like a documentary novel. There are fictional characters but is based on facts. Lajja has been a bestseller for a very long time. It has been published and translated in almost all Indian languages and also many foreign languages like French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, etc,’ Nasreen was heard saying at the book launch. She has been dubbed ‘anti-Islamic’ by fringe lunatics of Bangladesh, particularly those hobnobbing with the Khaleda Zia-led Bangladesh Nationalist Party and the Jamaat. Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with NetflixShe wears it as a badge of honour, flaunting her atheism while declaring compassion for those in Gaza, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Pakistan and of course Bangladesh.  She says her support was for the late Maqbool Fida Hussain, who was compelled to spend his last days in Qatar. She openly bats for Iranian bloggers who took on the neurotic Ahmedinejad.  Her other works such as Dwikhondito, Amar Meyebela, among others have been subjects of controversy. But her quips are often littered with seething irony: ‘If you don’t hurt people’s sentiments, you don’t need freedom of expression.’ Between The Covers is a weekly column on reading up and rating downlast_img read more
