Wait — no, I’m not. As much as I respect the original intent of the holiday (which became official back in 1894), to most of us, it’s just a bonus day off — one that’s blissfully tacked onto a weekend. So, yeah, stores; go ahead, run your sales. I’m listening. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Labor Day doesn’t bring out bargains to compete with the likes of Black Friday (which will be here before you know it), but there are definitely some sales worth your time. For example:We’ve rounded up the best Labor Day mattress deals. We’ve also gathered the best Labor Day laptop deals at Best Buy.The 2019 Vizio P Series Quantum is back under $999.Be sure to check out Amazon’s roughly three dozen Labor Day deals on TVs and audio. Symptoms of 74like famine in sight BNP

first_imgRuhul Kabir RizviThe Awami League government has created a situation of lawlessness by plundering public resources, especially looting money from banks, insurance companies and the share market, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party has alleged.BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has said the activists and beneficiaries of the ‘mandateless government’ are ruining the financial sector and the country as a whole. The BNP leader, during a briefing on Sunday, pointed out that the economy is in the doldrums and the people are suffering for the price-hike of essentials added to the lack of economic opportunities in society.”Reports say many people are living, banking on personal loans… Symptoms of the famine of 1974 are being visible,” Rizvi told newsmen at the party’s Naya Paltan central office.Referring to the recent scams in the private commercial banks, he observed that corruption and anarchy in the banking sector have turned epidemic. He listed the names of state-owned Sonali, Rupali, Agrani and Janata banks, and also specialised Krishi Bank, and NRB Commercial Bank and Farmers Bank that are plagued by fraudulent practices.”Those of the mandateless government have grabbed 56 out of 57 banks… Due to massive looting in the banking sector the commoners as clients are living in panic (about their deposits),” the BNP leader said. “However, the government’s ministers are now buying homes abroad.”On takeover of Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited earlier this year, he regretted that the foreign shareholders of the banks were withdrawing from the bank due to such unwarranted interference in the activities of the financial institution. “Most recently, the Social Islami Bank Limited has also been occupied by the Awami League’s people,” he said.Rizvi blasted the finance minister, AMA Muhith, for failure to publish the probe report on US$81 million cyber heist of the Bangladesh Bank. The BNP leader also criticised Muhith for downplaying the figures of poverty-ridden people in the country.Rizvi alleged that the moment the absolute number of poor is increasing, the AL’s men and their families are in a competition to grab public resources.”Looting, tender manipulation, extortion and politicisation are all affecting the entire society. As a result, law and order has broken down across the country,” he said.”There is no sector in the country where the ruling party men did not try to make money from,” he added. The BNP leader also dwelt on the rising unemployment, stagnation in investment and slowdown in remittances inflow.”If the situation continues, a catastrophe is likely and the people would be compelled to lead the life of animals,” he said. The BNP joint secretary general expressed his conviction that the nation would not get rid of the situation, until the fall of the ‘government without mandate’.last_img read more

Democrats target massage parlor owner linked to Trump

first_imgThe front window of the Orchids of Asia Day Spa is shown in Jupiter, Florida, US on 22 February. Photo: ReutersDemocratic congressional leaders have asked the FBI to investigate the founder of a Florida massage parlor chain who is an alleged acquaintance of president Donald Trump, according to a letter released on Monday.House of Representatives speaker Nancy Pelosi and senate democratic leader Chuck Schumer released the letter, signed by four other lawmakers. It asked investigators to look into “public reports about alleged activities by Ms Li ‘Cindy’ Yang and her apparent relationship with the president.”A chain of massage parlors founded by Yang is “suspected of involvement” in human trafficking and prostitution which involves female immigrants being forced to serve as “sex workers,” said the letter to the FBI and other federal investigative agencies.Senators Mark Warner and Dianne Feinstein and representatives Adam Schiff and Jerry Nadler signed the letter. It said Yang also reportedly created a business called GY US investments which they allege “may be selling access to the president and members of his family to clients from China.”Michelle Merson, a Florida lawyer who says she is representing Yang, could not immediately be reached for comment. On a website, Merson posted a video in which she said Yang is scared and in hiding.Merson said Yang denies the allegations made against her. “Ms. Yang is not concerned because she feels she’s speaking the truth and the truth will free her,” Merson said in the video. The Democrats’ letter said Yang’s website, which has been taken down, once offered clients the “opportunity to interact” with Trump and other political figures as well as participation in White House and Capitol Hill dinners. The letter said that, if proven, such allegations “raise serious counterintelligence concerns.”It asked if Yang had been the focus of earlier federal or state probes and for an assessment of “counterintelligence risks” which Yang’s activities might have posed. The Democrats also asked if other individuals have used Mar-a-Lago, the president’s Palm Beach estate, to offer foreigners access to Trump or people around him, as well as whether Yang or her foreign clients have had access to Trump or US officials at the White House, Mar-a-Lago, or other Trump properties. The FBI had no comment on the legislators’ letter. The White House, the Office of Director of National Intelligence, and the Secret Service did not immediately respond to requests for comment.last_img read more

Calcutta HC extends by a day stay on Bengal panchayat polls process

first_imgKolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Monday extended by a day till Tuesday its stay on the West Bengal’s panchayat election process.A single-judge bench of Justice Subrata Talukdar extended the stay till 2 p.m. on Tuesday in view of an appeal filed before a Division Bench of the High Court against the stay. A Division Bench of Justice Biswanath Samaddar and Justice Arindam Mukherjee is slated to hear the case at 4.30 p.m. on Monday.Justice Talukdar had, on Thursday, stayed the election process till April 16 on a petition by the Bharatiya Janata Party and asked the State Election Commission (SEC) to furnish by that date a comprehensive status report on the polls. Also Read – Heavy rain hits traffic, flightsOn Monday, BJP representative Pratap Banerjee furnished a bond of Rs five lakh as fine imposed by the court on the party for “misrepresenting facts” by moving both the Supreme Court and the High Court on the same plea.Justice Talukdar also permitted the state Congress President Adhir Chowdhury to become a party in the case, overruling objections from Trinamool Congress counsel Kalyan Banerjee. The two opposition parties have moved the court, accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress of unleashing massive pre-poll violence against their party workers to prevent them from filing nominations for the polls ever since the process began on April 2. The two parties also called the SEC a puppet of the ruling TMC after the poll panel withdrew its earlier order of extending the filing of nominations by a day, within a few hours of issuing the order last week. The panchayat elections were originally scheduled for May 1, 3 and 5, with the counting of votes slated on May 8.last_img read more
