It’s getting to the point where the NFL appears to be singling out Detroit Lions’ player Ndamukong Suh for scrutiny, as the defensive tackle is facing yet another potential fine. The NFL is currently reviewing Suh’s play against the Cleveland Browns in Sunday’s game. Suh appeared to lead with his helmet when he hit Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden. The hit happened after the QB let go the ball but it wasn’t penalized. After the play was shown on video posted on nfl.com Tuesday, the vice president of officiating, Dean Blandino said, “Why don’t we look at it some more?” indicating that they may change the call.Suh, who has a heap of fines on his resume, was fined $100,000 earlier in the year for an illegal block on Minnesota Vikings center John Sullivan in Week 1. He appealed the penalty, but lost last week. That payment was the largest fine in NFL history for an on-field conduct issue. read more

RBC will refinance TCI UK Bail Out loan

first_img RBC Team off to Grand Turk with EZ Pay Related Items:royal bank of canada, uk tci bail out Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppProvidenciales, 06 Jan 2015 – Royal Bank of Canada, RBC is the bank the Government will go with to refinance that UK-backed bail-out loan of 2009. The Loan Refinancing Ordinance passed on December 17th and took effect the next day. The new law lays out the who, the how, the how much and the how long among other things of the bridge loan refinancing which will do away with the UK guaranteed loan of $170 million dollars. It is outlined in the ordinance that the loan with RBC cannot exceed $28 million dollars, must be repaid at the end of three and a half years, at a rate initially of 1.2% and that it will be repaid in fourteen equal installments of two million dollars every ninety days. It is explained that in order to keep that borrowing rate, the Turks and Caicos will have to maintain a BBB+ rating for at least the duration of the loan; if we lose ground there, it will cause a hike in the borrowing rate. This also means that if the TCI secures a better credit rating, then the rate of the loan will decrease. Included in that ordinance is that the TCI can repay the RBC Loan early without penalty and that the first payment would be due ninety days after disbursement of the money. Apples iPhones infringe Qualcomm patent and should be banned ITC judge says

first_img $999 Now playing: Watch this: See It With the second case, an initial ruling in September by Administrative Law Judge Thomas Pender determined that Apple infringed one Qualcomm patent related to power management but didn’t infringe two other patents. He didn’t, however, believe iPhones should be banned from sale, saying the statutory public interest factors “weigh against issuing a limited exclusion order” related to the infringing products. But the full panel review, released Tuesday, determined that Qualcomm’s patents weren’t valid, thanks to “clear and convincing evidence” from Apple. “No remedial orders shall be issued, which renders moot any issues of remedy, the public interest, or bonding,” the ITC said. “The investigation is terminated.”Apple and Qualcomm have been fighting over patents and licensing since January 2017, when Apple filed suit against Qualcomm for roughly $1 billion, saying the maker of wireless chips didn’t give fair licensing terms for its technology. Apple wants to pay a lower amount for using Qualcomm technology in its devices. Qualcomm, the world’s biggest provider of mobile chips, responded by suing Apple for patent infringement and seeking a ban on iPhone sales. The company maintains that no modern handset — including the iPhone — would’ve been possible without its cellular technologies. The US isn’t the first court to recommend banning iPhones for infringing Qualcomm intellectual property. In early December, a Chinese court ordered four of Apple’s Chinese subsidiaries to stop importing or selling iPhones because of patent infringement. Later that same month, a court in Munich found that Apple infringed Qualcomm’s technology for power savings in smartphones and ruled that the iPhone maker must halt sales of the device in Germany. In late 2017, in the case that Judge Pender is overseeing, Qualcomm asked the ITC to ban the import and sale of certain iPhones that use Intel’s 4G modem. Those would’ve included the iPhone X, 8, 8 Plus, 7 and 7 Plus that run on AT&T and T-Mobile. The phones that run on networks from Verizon and Sprint use Qualcomm’s modem and wouldn’t have been included in the ban.In that case, Qualcomm initially asserted 88 claims from six patents. The ITC’s decision from September upheld only one claim from one patent. Tuesday’s decision invalidated that single claim. Duking it out in courtEarlier this month, a jury in San Diego determined that Apple violated three Qualcomm patents and should pay the chipmaker $31 million for infringing on its technology. Qualcomm had alleged that Apple used its technology without permission in some versions of the iPhone. The jury awarded Qualcomm the full amount it had requested at the start of the two-week trial. The companies next face off on April 15 for a trial over Qualcomm’s licensing practices. Because Qualcomm owns patents related to 3G, 4G and 5G phones — as well as other features like software — any handset maker building a device that connects to the networks has to pay a licensing fee, even if it doesn’t use Qualcomm’s chips. Apple and the companies that build its phones, like Foxconn, don’t believe Qualcomm charges a fair rate. That trial, also in San Diego, will last 20 days before being handed to the jury. At the same time, Qualcomm is waiting for a judge’s decision in a US Federal Trade Commission lawsuit that argued the chipmaker is a monopoly. The FTC two years ago accused Qualcomm of forcing customers like Apple to work with it exclusively and charging excessive licensing fees for its technology. Because of the legal disputes, Apple has moved away from using Qualcomm modems in its devices. Its newest phones, the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR, use only Intel 4G chips.Originally published March 26, 11:25 a.m. PT.Updates, 12:02 p.m.: Adds Qualcomm statement; 2:24 p.m.: Includes second ITC case ruling; 3:49 p.m.: Adds Apple comment; 11:46 p.m.: Includes additional details and Qualcomm statement on the second ruling. It then can be examined by President Donald Trump. Qualcomm welcomed the news in the first case.”We appreciate Judge McNamara’s recognition of Apple’s infringement of our hardware patent and that she will be recommending an import ban and cease and desist order,” Don Rosenberg, Qualcomm general counsel, said in a statement. It said in a press release that “the Commission’s decision is inconsistent with the recent unanimous jury verdict finding infringement of the same patent after Apple abandoned its invalidity defense at the end of trial. We will seek reconsideration by the Commission in view of the jury verdict.”Apple, meanwhile, said in a statement that “We’re pleased the ITC has found Qualcomm’s latest patent claims invalid. It’s another important step to making sure American companies are able to compete fairly in the marketplace.” The company called Qualcomm’s ITC case an effort “to distract from having to answer for the real issues, their monopolistic business practices.” It added that “we look forward to detailing the many ways they’re harming consumers and stifling innovation when we present our case in San Diego next month.” Review • iPhone XS review, updated: A few luxury upgrades over the XR $999 See it Preview • iPhone XS is the new $1,000 iPhone X Comments Phones Components Tech Industry Aug 31 • Best places to sell your used electronics in 2019 Apple iPhone XS See It Aug 31 • iPhone XR vs. iPhone 8 Plus: Which iPhone should you buy? Here’s how to clean it Apple and Qualcomm have been battling over patents and licensing.  Sarah Tew/CNET The International Trade Commission on Tuesday handed down two rulings in Apple and Qualcomm’s battle over patents. One found in favor of Qualcomm while the other sided with Apple. In one case, a judge said Apple’s iPhones have infringed a Qualcomm patent and should be banned from sale. But a full commission review in a second, separate case said Apple didn’t infringe Qualcomm patents and dismissed that suit. It also said it found that Qualcomm’s patents aren’t valid. In the first findings published Tuesday, Administrative Law Judge MaryJoan McNamara, in an initial determination, said Apple has infringed claim one of Qualcomm’s US Patent No. 8,063,674, which relates to power management in computing devices. The technology improves the performance of the power on/off on a device’s control network and processor while also reducing power consumption and improving battery life. Qualcomm accused Apple’s A10, A11 and A12 chips, which act as the brains of the iPhone 7 to the iPhone XS, of infringement. Because of that infringement, McNamara wrote, she plans to recommend that iPhones should be banned from sale in the US. She found that Apple didn’t infringe other patents asserted by Qualcomm and said some of Qualcomm’s patent claims are invalid. Findings show ancient birds died in flash flood

first_img Primitive birds shared dinosaurs’ fate (PhysOrg.com) — During a presentation at the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology’s 71st annual Meeting in Las Vegas, researchers Gareth Dyke and Darren Naish from the University of Southampton presented their findings of the first known Mesozoic bird colony remains. The discovery was made in the Sebes area of Transylvania, Romania and includes a large collection of bird fossils and eggs, both partial and whole, trapped within the limestone. It is believed that this colony of birds was wiped out when a flash flood hit the area some 100 million years ago. The prehistoric birds belonged to the enantiornithines and had claws and saw-like beaks with teeth. They had clawed fingers on their wings but, besides these features, these birds resembled modern day birds. These birds are an extinct branch of modern birds but researchers have been unable to determine why these became extinct while other ancestors lived for much longer. This is the first evidence that ancient birds nested near the water similar to how ducks do now. It is also the first time full, well-preserved eggs have been found and researchers hope this will help them learn about the biology of these animals. Finding whole and preserved eggs, researchers say this will allow them to figure out the size and the volume of the bird’s eggs for the first time. The location where this fossilized nesting ground was discovered has been rich in other remains as well. Researchers have also discovered the remains of a predatory bird-like dinosaur known as a Balaur, small rodent animals, a dwarf plant-eating dinosaur and one of the world’s largest pterosaurs. Back during the Cretaceous period, Romania was a large island and apparently filled with many different species of animals. One thing the researchers do note is that to date, there doesn’t seem to be any evidence of the big predatory type dinosaurs in this area. The two parties also called the SEC a puppet of the ruling TMC after the poll panel withdrew its earlier order of extending the filing of nominations by a day, within a few hours of issuing the order last week. The panchayat elections were originally scheduled for May 1, 3 and 5, with the counting of votes slated on May 8.last_img read more

Petrol and diesel should be slashed by Rs 10 at least CM

first_imgDarjeeling: The Centre on Thursday announced a Rs 2.50 per litre cut in petrol and diesel prices by reducing excise duty and asking PSU oil firms to take a hit of Rs 9,000 crore, a step that was matched by BJP-ruled states by slashing VAT to double the reduction in retail rates. The price cuts would be effective from Thursday midnight.Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while dubbing the Centre’s move an ‘eyewash’, strongly turned down Union Finance minister Arun Jaitley’s appeal to the states to match the Centre’s Rs 2.50 reduction of fuel prices by reducing VAT. She insisted that the Centre should first roll back the Rs 10 cess they had imposed on fuel prices recently. Top frameworks for building your Progressive Web Apps PWA

first_imgThe hype and rise of progressive web apps are tremendous. A PWA is basically a web application that feels like a native application to the user. By making your app a PWA, not only do you acquire new users, but you can also retain them for longer. Here’s a quick rundown of all things good about a PWA. Reliable: Loads instantly even under poor network conditions. Lighting fast and app-like: Responds to the user’s actions with speed and with a smooth interaction. Engaging and responsive: Gives the feeling that it was made specifically for that device, but it should be able to work across all platforms. Protected and secure: Served over HTTPS to make sure the contents of the app are not messed with. If you’re not already developing your next app as a PWA, here are 5 reasons why you should do that asap. And if you’re confused about choosing the best framework for developing your PWA, here are the top 3 frameworks available to make your next app a PWA. Ionic Ionic is one of the most popular frameworks for building a progressive web app. Let’s look at a few reasons why you should choose Ionic as your PWA framework Free and open-source:  Ionic is open source, and licensed under MIT. Open-source means developers can manage the code structure easily, saving time, money and efforts. They also have a worldwide community forum to connect with other Ionic developers, ask questions, and help out others. Cross-platform and one-codebase: Ionic allows seamless building of apps across popular operating systems, such as Android, iOS and Windows. It has a one codebase feature. This means apps are deployed through Apache Cordova with a single code base, and the application adapts automatically to the device it is functioning in. Rich UI: Ionic is equipped with pre-built components that are used to customize design themes and elements. It is based on SASS UI, with rich features to create fast, robust, interactive, native-like applications. Powerful functionality: Ionic is supported by Angular. The component API of Angular helps developers create interactive hybrid and web apps. Ionic is equipped with Cordova Plugins for accessing various native features, like Camera, GPS, and so on. It also features a powerful CLI for building, testing and deploying apps across multiple platforms. Read our Hybrid Mobile Development with Ionic to build a complete, professional-quality, hybrid mobile application with Ionic. You can also checkout Hybrid Mobile apps: What you need to know, for a quick rundown of all that is to know about a Hybrid mobile app. Polymer Google’s Polymer App Toolbox is another contender for the development of PWAs. It is a collection of web components, tools, and templates for building Progressive Web Apps. Blends PWAs with Web components Polymer allows developers to architect a component-based web app using Polymer and Web Components. Web components can form encapsulated and reusable custom HTML elements. They are independent of the frameworks because they are made of pure HTML/CSS/JS, unlike framework-dependent UI components in React/ Angular. The web components are provided through a light-weight Polymer Library for creating framework-independent, custom components. More features include: Responsive design using the app layout components. Modular routing using the elements. Localization with . Turnkey support for local storage with app storage elements. Offline caching as a progressive enhancement, using service workers. Build tooling to support serving the app multiple ways: unbundled for delivery over HTTP/2 with server push, and bundled for delivery over HTTP/1. Each component whether used separately or together can be used to build a full-featured Progressive web app. Most importantly, each component is additive. For a simple app one only needs the app-layout. As it gets more complicated, developers can add routing, offline caching, and a high-performance server as required. Read our Getting Started with Polymer book to create responsive web apps using Polymer. Angular Angular, probably the most popular front-end web application platform, can also be used to make robust, reliable, and responsive PWAs. Before the release of version 5, supporting progressive web apps in Angular required a lot of expertise on the developers’ part.Version 5 comes equipped with a new version of the Angular Service Worker for built-in PWA support. Angular 6 (released a few days back) has two new CLI commands. Both these versions make it very simple to make web application downloadable and installable, just like a native mobile application. Service Worker Updates With Angular 5 the development of Service Workers is becoming significantly easier. By using Angular CLI developers can choose to add Service Worker functionality by default. The Angular Service Worker functionality is provided by the module @angular/service-worker. Service worker can power up an application by only providing some JSON configuration instead of writing the code manually. The key difference with other service worker generators (like Workbox, sw-precache) is the fact, that you do not re-generate the service worker file itself, you only update its control file. New CLI commands Angular 6, also introduces two new commands apart from the service worker updates. The first, ng update, is a CLI command for updating dependencies and code. The second command, ng add, supports turning applications into progressive web apps, which support offline web pages. Apart from these frameworks, React is also a good alternative. Backed by Facebook, it has a Create-React-App generator which is the official scaffolding tool to generate a Reactjs App. Get started with Scott Domes’s Progressive Web Apps with React as your first step for building PWA applications. Yet another popular choice, would be Webpack. Webpack plugins can generate the service worker and manifest required for a PWA to be registered. It uses a Google project called Workbox which provides tools that help make offline support for web apps easier to set up. The bottom line is that the frameworks for building progressive web apps are growing and expanding at a rapid rate with regular updates every couple of months. Choosing a particular framework thus doesn’t make much difference to the app behavior. It only depends on the developer’s area of interest and expertise.
