Come May 11th, the Dave Matthews Band will embark on a major tour that spans the entirety of the summer. The group formed in 1991, thus this year marks their 25th anniversary. Eager to honor the milestone, DMB recently released some classic archival footage of some very early live performance. Now, their new announcement takes the celebration to the people.On May 7th, just days before the tour proper, the band will hit the John Paul Jones Arena in their hometown of Charlottesville, VA for a special 25th anniversary celebration. The band aims to raise over $1 million, the entirety of which will go to local charities in the Charlottesville area, as organized by the band’s own Bama Works Fund. The charitable organization helps raise money for local charities, and has raised over $40 million since its foundation in 1999.Tickets for the newly-announced anniversary celebration will be released via pre-sale from March 23rd through the 28th, and the general on sale begins next Friday, April 1st, at 10 AM Eastern. After two long years, Phish returned to Las Vegas, NV for an exciting four-night run that leads into the holiest of jam band holidays, Halloween. After a brief fall tour that has been highlighted with great playing, Big Boat material and a sit-in from the Grateful Dead’s own Bob Weir, all eyes have been on Vegas. Fortunately, Phish got started with a bust-out heavy opener to set the pace for the weekend to come.The band introduced their four night stand at MGM Grand with a nod to their 2014 Halloween trip to Las Vegas. The space ship immediately blasted off; excitement was in the air with the initial notes of “Martian Monster.” With “No Men In No Man’s Land,” Trey Anastasio came down hard with the gritty licks. The band picked up on it, and fed from the fruits of their own energy. Off the bat, the spirit was high, and then the band kept things exciting with two big bust outs in a row! They broke into the first “Dogs Stole Things” since 2012 (182 shows) and the first “Beauty of My Dreams” since 2010 (227 shows), and these led into the relative rarity and crowd favorite, “Destiny Unbound.”While the audience was initially a bit apprehensive toward the new song “Home,” the Big Boat tune evolved into an excellent jam, complete with Mike Gordon bass bombs galore. Los Lobos’ “When The Circus Comes” was a nice sentimental moment in the first set, but it was the impressive “Steam” that really picked things up at the MGM. The standard “The Wedge” came next, and the set closed with a solid “Walls of a Cave.” Coming off of a highly energetic introduction, the crowd sank right in with the flow of the show.The second set began with a rarity, “Crimes of the Mind,” which hadn’t been played since 2009 (283 shows). Phish extended that energy into an improv-heavy “Golden Age,” reaching a next-level 25-minute mark worth recording, then shuffling into a dimension that brought “Simple” to a “Light” for the ages. Joy track “Twenty Years Later” provided a breath of fresh air, before “Blaze On” and “The Squirming Coil” became an excellent end to the second set.The band returned for a brief “Bouncing Around the Room” before closing with Jimi Hendrix‘s “Bold As Love.” The TV On The Radio original, “Golden Age”, was the absolute takeaway, especially after their previous, jam-less show in Grand Prairie, Texas. The group opened with “Picture in Picture” from 2014’s Never Odd or Even, and never let up from there. “Mucho” and “Vol. 03 #86” provided the jam vehicles for evening, while Radiohead‘s “The National Anthem” made an appearance, and the band’s tongue-in-cheek version of Britney Spears‘ “Toxic” brought the first night to a close.Night two, 7/29, boasted a monster “Nerds,” along with an off-the-wall, over 18-minute “Bahbi” (from 2012’s Drawn Onward). “Freight Trains Filled with Dynamite” featured an appearance from John Coleman on bass, and the encore featured yet another nostalgic pop cover, but this time they group channeled their 90’s angst with Alanis Morissette‘s “You Oughta Know.” Take a listen to both shows, and check out som pro-shot video of the 7/28/17 below, all courtesy of MK DEVO:
While there may be a lot of things wrong with the world we live in today, the new season of South Park just started last night, so thats at least one recent event that we can mark in the “win” column. Known for their bitingly clever satire and absurdist sense of humor, the show has frequently riffed on popular music and artists, from gay fish Kanye West, to the “mysterious” true identity of Lorde, to crunchy “Hippie Jam Fest 2005” headliners Phish.Last night, the show kicked off its 21st (?!) season, and while the kids are still somehow in elementary school decades later, their humor hasn’t lost step with the art of topical humor. In the episode, the main “joke” is that, in order to increase jobs, tasks for which we’ve gotten used to relying on electronics are replaced by actual human laborers. Load remaining images It wasn’t until returning to the stage for an encore of “Reelin’ in the Years” that Donald Fagen acknowledged the absence of Steely Dan’s other half. “I’d like to thank my long-time partner Walter Becker for helping me write some pretty cool songs,” he said. Then, in the darkly humorous tone that both Becker and he embraced, Fagen added, “Unfortunately, Walter couldn’t be with us here tonight.”For a band that didn’t consider itself a band and gave up performing live at the height of its popularity in search of perfection in the studio, Steely Dan has turned out to the be one of the most reliable touring acts of the past decade. Settling in for multi-show residencies that focus on entire albums and greatest hits has been part of their touring success, and this year’s nine-night run at New York’s Beacon Theatre continues the tradition in the post-Walter Becker world.Wednesday night’s featured album was Countdown to Ecstasy, the Dan’s 1973 follow-up to the surprising success of their 1972 debut, Can’t Buy a Thrill. Sales expectations were initially high for Countdown, and so many copies were produced that discounted cutouts were available in record bins for most of the ‘70s. It was a fine effort that demonstrated a step forward from their pop-infused debut, but the album failed to produce the monster radio hits that the era demanded. Fortunately, Countdown has aged well, featuring familiar favorites such as “Bodhisattva” and “My Old School” alongside once-lesser tracks like “Pearl of the Quarter”, “The Boston Rag”, and “King of the World”, which have since emerged as standouts.Fagen and Becker once shuttled studio players in and out for specific riffs, but the current lineup of stellar musicians has remained steady for many years. Guitarist Jon Herrington and drummer Keith Carlock are joined by a four-piece horn section, three backup singers (including Catherine Russell, who’s a noted jazz singer in her own right), Jim Beard on keys and Freddie Washington on bass. Though not exactly Walter Becker’s replacement, the only new member of the band is Connor Kennedy, a superb young guitarist whom Fagen initially recruited for his Nightflyers band.In addition to the complete Countdown to Ecstasy, Wednesday’s show featured multiple selections from Aja, including “Black Cow”, “Josie”, “Peg”, and the title track. “Kid Charlemagne” from The Royal Scam and “Hey Nineteen” from Gaucho rounded out the evening.Upcoming shows through October 30th will spotlight Aja and Gaucho as well Fagen’s The Nightfly solo album. Janelle Monáe is the latest pop artist to stop by the Spotify studios to perform some music for the streaming platform’s Spotify Singles series. The well-known singer and songwriter has kept a busy schedule full of similar appearances over the past year in promotion of her 2018 Dirty Computer studio album. For her turn on the audio streaming series, Monáe performed “I Like That” from her album, in addition to providing a spin on Bob Marley & The Wailer‘s “High Tide or Low Tide” from the reggae band’s 1973 album, Catch A Fire.Monáe’s new version of the reggae classic sticks pretty close to the original, although hers does shine a little clearer thanks to the modern recording technology used to capture what is a flawless performance. Fittingly, the southern rock show featured a slew of special guests, as former Allman Brothers Band guitarist Dickey Betts made an appearance, as well as his son Duane Betts, bassist Berry Oakley Jr., who’s father was the original ABB bassist, and Lamar Williams Jr., son of former bassist Lamar Williams. The family affair seemed like a sneak-peak of the recently announced Allman Betts Band, which the original press release referred to as “the new ABB”, and includes Devon and Duane, along with Berry Oakley Jr., slide guitarist Johnny Stachela, and DAP percussionists R. Scott Bryan (Sheryl Crow) and John Lum.
