The Cures Are Inside You

first_img(Visited 12 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0 Your body has the means to repair itself, if the right cells get into the right places.A nose for repair:  Medical Xpress reported that a man with a severed spinal cord—an injury thought to be irreparable—has recovered partial sensation and movement of his limbs again.  The secret: transplanted cells from his nose!  This is astonishing; it offers hope for quadriplegics some day.Treating patients with a complete spinal cord injury (SCI), the condition in which no motor or sensory function is preserved in the spinal segments below the level of the injury, has generally been unsuccessful. This is because no treatment methods have been able to regenerate the severed spinal nerves across the injured area. Now, doctors in Poland and scientists from England may have restored some function and sensory sensation to a 38 year-old man who had sustained a traumatic transection (severing) of the spinal cord in the upper vertabral level Th9. By removing one of his olfactory bulbs, where the sense of smell resides, and transplanting his own olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) and olfactory nerve fibroblasts (ONFs) into the damaged area along with a nerve “bridge” constructed between the two stumps of the damage spinal column, they have seen some voluntary limb function and sensation recovery over a 19 month follow-up.The BBC News has a video of the patient, Darek Fidyka, walking slowly with the aid of a frame; he said it’s “like you were born again.”Update 10/23/14:  Medical Xpress update says the patient is not only walking, but can dress and undress himself and get into bed without help.  Darek, age 40, described his progress with tears in his eyes.  The doctors are now seeking new patients for the life-changing treatment.Diabetes cure?  A new stem cell recipe offers hope for diabetics, Science Magazine reported.  It appears that the stem cells could be embryonic or induced pluripotent stem cells; either way, the stem cells appear able to create the pancreatic beta cells necessary to produce insulin.  Tests with mice have cured them of diabetes.  “The diabetes research community has been waiting for ages for this type of breakthrough,” one researcher said.  Human treatments are probably years away, though. The all-healing eye:  Could the cure for blindness be right in front of your eyeballs?  Medical Xpress says that stem cells found in the cornea show hope for restoring sight to the blind.  “Scientists at the University of Southampton have discovered that a region on the front surface of the eye harbours special stem cells that could treat blinding eye conditions,” the article begins; these cells are found “in a narrow gap lying between the transparent cornea and white sclera.”  Macular degeneration is one of the diseases that may be treatable with these stem cells.Professor Andrew Lotery, of the University of Southampton and a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Southampton General Hospital led the study. He comments: “These cells are readily accessible, and they have surprising plasticity, which makes them an attractive cell resource for future therapies. This would help avoid complications with rejection or contamination because the cells taken from the eye would be returned to the same patient. More research is now needed to develop this approach before these cells are used in patients.”Another good thing: these cells are found in old people’s eyes, too, “and can be cultured even from the corneal limbus of 97 year olds.”  This offers hope of treatment for both old and young from their own eyeballs.Wait; there’s more:  These are just a few examples of a burgeoning movement to find healing cells within the body.  Stem cells have been found in the esophagus (Science Daily), possibly available to treat throat conditions and cancer.  Stem cells in the brain (Science Daily) appear to have an “unexpected role” in regenerating lost neurons, a repair long thought impossible.  And stem cells in placentas (Science Daily) might one day treat multiple sclerosis.  Clinical trials so far show this is safe.Update 10/23/14: Another story on Medical Xpress says that researchers at Washington University in St. Louis have reprogrammed mouse skin cells directly into brain cells, without having to go through the stem cell stage.  This could herald future treatments for Huntington’s Disease and other brain disorders. This is all wonderful news, but it raises a question: if these cells are there, why don’t they fix things without our help?  Did the Creator install repair tools in us that don’t work?  Here are some possible answers: (1) maybe they do more than we know, and we just aren’t aware of it.  More importantly, (2) there’s been a lot of degradation since the Fall.  A Biblical creation view would expect that the curse of sin that brought death broke a lot of things that were intended to promote immortality.  We see that salamanders can regrow lost limbs.  Maybe that’s a hint of what could have been, and will some day be, on a restored world for the righteous.  In the meantime, God has given us the ability to learn about how things work so that we can help one another.  The “good” stem cells (adult cells) show promise to bring back some of that lost repair capability, without having to kill an embryo to do it.  More power to these researchers!  Let the FDA not delay unnecessarily.  You and I know people who could really use these “miracle” treatments.last_img read more

What is the Partnership?

first_imgOne of the biggest impacts from hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup will come from the phenomenal marketing and communication opportunity it will offer the country and continent. As world attention focuses on the first African World Cup this is an opportunity for Africans to tell their own stories. The 2010 National Communication Partnership is a joint effort of communicators across society and in the many creative and communication disciplines to take advantage of this communication opportunity of a lifetime to benefit our country and continent. The 2010 Tournament itself is FIFA’s event, made possible by sponsorship in return for exclusive marketing rights for the tournament itself. The Partnership respects absolutely these marketing rights. The Partnership’s communication is in a different sphere. Its communication objectives are to take advantage of this opportunity of a lifetime to express and further build unity and pride amongst South Africans; to inspire our youth; to market the country and continent to the world; to build African solidarity and to create a communication climate that helps use this chance to speed up development and expand opportunities. The Partnership is one of the ways people across sectors in South Africa and Africa are coming together to prepare for the greatest sporting event on earth. The Role of the PartnershipThe Partnership’s role is to promote coordinated local and international communication, so that the many communication agencies and role-players speak with one powerful voice to maximise the benefit of hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup for the country and continent. The Partnership provides a strategic framework for communication – a point of reference – for communicators in the period leading up to and during 2010.Its function is to promote coherence of message and to provide forums for information sharing and coordination, mutual support for campaigns, strategy formation, and to jointly address issues as they arise. The Partnership is not a new communication agency. Its many member entities – SA Tourism, the International Marketing Council, Dept of Sports and Recreation, South African Airways, Government, Proudly South African, the Organising Committee, private sector and civil society – will embark on communication in the context of 2010 as per their respective mandates and roles. But communication will be more powerful because communicators are working together in partnership, sharing a common vision and common messages.last_img read more

Recycling Vinyl Siding

first_imgGBA Encyclopedia: Job-Site RecyclingJob-Site Recycling: PVCJob-Site Recycling: Asphalt Roofing ShinglesJob-Site Recycling: Gypsum WallboardVinyl Windows and Vinyl SidingDoes this make vinyl siding green? You will find no shortage of perspectives on this issue. A lot depends on how you weigh various environmental attributes — such as toxic constituents — and how you weigh a variety of very complex human health studies. A good start on this issue is the vinyl pro (“Vinyl is Green”) and con (“Vinyl is Lethal”) blogs here on GBA.What about that vinyl siding recycling project from 13 years ago?I am happy to report that Eikenhout Inc. — distributors of roofing, siding, doors and windows — still recycles vinyl siding in Grand Rapids, MI. Eikenhout now uses a 30-yard roll-off serviced by Waste Management, Inc to collect the vinyl siding waste. Curt Van Heuvelen, CGP, of Eikenhout, reports that the container is filled and emptied around once a month and Eikenhout accepts plenty of tear-off as well as cut-off waste vinyl siding. “Our vinyl siding recycling program is still going strong and is an important element of our company green building approach,” says Van Heuvelen.ResourcesThe American Chemistry Council has a pretty good Vinyl Siding Recycling: A How To Guide. The Guide provides a good overview on PVC recycling and then steps to follow to build a recycling program. The Vinyl Institute has a good collection of information resources: a Vinyl Recycling Directory and a Recycled Vinyl Products Manufacturer Directory. In 1998, while at the NAHB Reseach Center, I worked on a vinyl siding recycling project in Grand Rapids, MI. It was pretty simple: siding installers stuffed their cut-off waste into the long cardboard boxes the new siding came in, and back-hauled both to the same place they bought their vinyl siding stock. There, the vinyl cut-offs were placed in one container and the cardboard in another. The vinyl cut-offs were baled and when a 40,000-pound load was accumulated, a plastics broker would negotiate a price for the tractor-trailer load.Recycling vinyl sidingSince polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a thermoplastic material, it is pretty straightforward to recycle: it is simply ground up and re-melted and formed or extruded into new products. Having said that, PVC faces the same major recycling obstacles as many other materials: efficiently collecting enough waste material and managing contamination. The former is an important problem for new construction cut-off waste: getting together 40,000 pounds of cut-offs is a heck of a lot of cut-offs. The latter is a particular problem with tear-off vinyl siding, where dirt, nails, and mixed-in aluminum flashing all pose different separation challenges. So where does vinyl siding recycling stand today? Many plastic recyclers will take PVC material, even though their focus may be other more consumer-based plastics, such No. 1 polyethylene terephthalate (PETE or PET) or No. 2 high density polyethylene (HDPE). While there are plastics recyclers nation-wide who will recycle PVC, you may need to work with them on construction and demolition PVC recycling, dealing with the two main issues listed above: quantities and contamination. How OKR’s Completely Transformed Our Culture The current ratio is somewhat similar to your debt to equity ratio, and will also be calculated using information from your company’s balance sheet. The current ratio is calculated by dividing your total assets (what you own) by your total liabilities (what you owe). This will help illustrate whether or not your business is financially solvent. If your business has significantly more liabilities than assets, you will have a difficult time securing further lines of credit. Furthermore, assuming that at least some of your liabilities are actively accruing interest, a weak current ratio can also have a negative impact on your profit margins. While having some debt is usually considered a good thing, it still needs to be carefully managed.ConclusionIn order to make decisions that are truly in your business’ best interest, you will want to get as full of an understanding of your financial situation as you possibly can. By paying attention to these valuable metrics, your business will be able to decide whether assuming a new project is actually a good idea. For further guidance and expertise, you may also want to consider hiring an eCommerce bookkeeping specialist. Customer Retention Related Posts Both your revenues and expenses can be immediately taken from your business’ annual income statement. While net income (revenues less expenses) will be an important metric, it only paints a partial picture of your business due to the fact raw income figures are not appropriately scaled. Looking at the ratio of your business’ revenue streams to your expenses will help you determine if you are moving in the right direction. In order to maximize the usefulness of this ratio, you should actively track it over time. If expenses have increased without corresponding revenues, then it may be time for your business to reevaluate its overall strategy. There are many different ways that your business can establish a competitive advantage. Some of these methods will be much more accessible than others. For example, while some business strategies may require a large amount of capital up front, creating a competitive advantage through better accounting practices is something almost all businesses can immediately do for free.By constantly striving to improve your business’ accounting practices, you can consistently enhance your bottom line and operate more efficiently. Though accounting and bookkeeping can often feel quite tedious, their universal importance should not be ignored.Investing in outsourced accounting solutions can help your business thrive. This is because in order to improve your approach to bookkeeping, your business will need to pay close attention to certain details provided by experts. In this article, we will discuss five of the most pressing accounting metrics for your business to pay attention to. We will also cover how focusing on these metrics can give your business the competitive edge you’ve been looking for. Current Ratio Using your business’ balance sheet—which provides a “snapshot” of your business at a specific point in time—you will be able to determine your assets, liabilities, and total equity (assets less liabilities). The debt to equity ratio is calculated by dividing your total liabilities by your total equity. Ideally, your business will have a greater level of equity than debt, though this is rarely the case for new businesses or businesses that are planning a major expansion. Still, by using the debt to equity ratio, you will be able to determine your general financial status and current level of profitability. This ratio will also be very useful when deciding whether applying for new debt can be financially justified. Tags:#customer retention#Debt#Inventory#Revenue#Turnover In order for your business to operate as efficiently as possible, developing productive inventory practices will be absolutely necessary. Good inventory practices will be even more important for businesses operating in the restaurant industry, where inventory will have a limited usable lifespan. In general, you should aim to keep your working inventory somewhat low while simultaneously making sure you avoid inventory shortages. By paying close attention to your inventory turnover, you will be able to decide which inventory practices are best (FIFO vs. LIFO), where capital can be used more efficiently, and which products have the highest levels of demand. Debt to Equity Ratio Inventory Turnover As any experienced business owner will surely agree, it is much easier to keep an existing customer than it is to go out and find a new one. Because of this, your business will want to retain each of your customers for as long as you possibly can. Looking at retention rates will help illustrate your customer’s level of satisfaction more accurately than customer surveys or other more traditional metrics (though these are still useful). If possible, you may also want to consider tracking the “lifetime value” of each of your prospective customers. With this information in hand, you will be able to develop a notably more precise marketing strategy. Phenomenon called Shammi Kapoor refuses to die down

first_imgYears of hard struggle, patient perseverance and even hard-hitting brickbats created the “Shammi Kapoor phenomenon” which is remembered by his fans even after he bade adieu to the silver screen.Being son of Prithviraj Kapoor and brother of “showman” Raj Kapoor was not easy to carve a niche for Shammi. When he embarked upon his acting career, he had to live up to a lot of expectations.Shammi was aware that comparisons will be drawn because his brother was already an established superstar and an acclaimed filmmaker. He knew that if he needed to make a mark, he should be as different from his brother as possible. However, making his debut in 1953, Shammi’s initial film portrayed him as nothing more than a mere shadow of his brother Raj.Films like Rail Ka Dibba, Chor Bazaar, Shama Parvana, Hum Sab Chor Hain, Memsaheb and Miss Coca Cola had Shammi in a completely different get-up, especially his hairdo, his moustache, and even his on-screen antics resembled to those of Raj Kapoor to a considerable extent. It was only in 1957, with Nasir Hussain’s Tumsa Nahin Dekha, that the actor finally tasted success. He sported a new look sans whiskers on the lines of the contemporary Hollywood greats like Elvis Presley and James Dean; and a star was born.Shammi often discussed with his friends on how best to present himself, especially when his flicks bombed at the box office one after another.Bunny Ruben came up with the title rebel star, struggling to make a space against the reigning trio of Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand and Dilip Kumar.advertisementTumsa Nahin Dekha was also Nasir Hussain’s directorial debut and its success prompted the Nasir-Shammi pair to follow up with several blockbusters. One of the main highlights of the film was its foot-tapping music, and boisterous, smooth and easy dancing style of Shammi that gained immense popularity and literally became his trademark over the years.Incidentally, Shammi was happily married to well known actress Geeta Bali even before he became a star. And his marriage didn’t affect his popularity even a bit.But unfortunately for him, Geeta Bali passed away too soon due to illness. In 1959, the Nasir-Shammi combination delivered yet another superhit, Dil Deke Dekho which was also the launching pad for Asha Parekh. Shammi never looked back ever since. He finally hit big time in 1961 with the all-time classic, one of his most popular films till date – Junglee – directed by Subodh Mukherjee. The film also attains significance for giving him the image of ‘The Yahoo Yuppie’. Junglee regarded as a ‘cult classic’ was incidentally one of the first romantic films to be made in colour.Shammi’s persona as a fun-loving, boisterous, romantic and rebellious hero worked very well and contributed to the success of many of his movies including China Town, Dil Tera Deewana and Professor.Aware of the kind of hysteria he generated among the youth, most of his films were hero-centric and youth-oriented.Filmmakers would cast new heroine opposite him to add freshness to the film. Some of the prominent ladies who made their debuts against Shammi later went on to become stars like Asha Parekh, Saira Banu and Sharmila Tagore. The Nasir-Shammi combination struck gold at the box-office with Teesri Manzil, one of the most unforgettable films of Shammi’s career.Shammi sashayed his way into young hearts aided by melodious, memorable music composed by RD Burman in the murder mystery directed by Vijay Anand. It was also one of Shammi’s biggest hits. Despite his increasing weight, An Evening In Paris, Brahmachari and Tumse Achha Kaun Hai did reasonably well.Salubrious music of these films had as much to contribute to their success. One of Shammi’s last films as a hero was Ramesh Sippy’s Andaz, where he was paired opposite Hema Malini.Despite his successes, critics of that time would dismiss his films as lightweight tales and criticise him for his acting. But he replied to criticism with sensitive performances in Brahmachari and highly charged Teesri Manzil. He donned the hat of a director, making Manoranjan in 1974, a film based on Irma La Douce. Two years later, he made Bandalbaaz. However, both the films didn’t do well at the box office.Shammi never really bid adieu to the big screen, appearing in films time and again giving an opportunity to the next generation of stars to share screen space with him. He starred with Shah Rukh Khan in Chamatkar (1992) and played Salman Khan’s grandfather in Janam Samjha Karo (1999).His latest onscreen stint was a cameo in grand nephew Ranbir Kapoor’s yet-to-be-released film Rockstar directed by Imtiaz Ali.advertisementHis love for the cyber world was well known. Shammi was the founder and chairman of Internet Users Community of India (IUCI). He also played a major role in setting up internet organizations like the Ethical Hackers Association and maintained a website dedicated to the Kapoor family.-With PTI inputslast_img read more

Apples iPhones infringe Qualcomm patent and should be banned ITC judge says

first_img $999 Now playing: Watch this: See It With the second case, an initial ruling in September by Administrative Law Judge Thomas Pender determined that Apple infringed one Qualcomm patent related to power management but didn’t infringe two other patents. He didn’t, however, believe iPhones should be banned from sale, saying the statutory public interest factors “weigh against issuing a limited exclusion order” related to the infringing products. But the full panel review, released Tuesday, determined that Qualcomm’s patents weren’t valid, thanks to “clear and convincing evidence” from Apple. “No remedial orders shall be issued, which renders moot any issues of remedy, the public interest, or bonding,” the ITC said. “The investigation is terminated.”Apple and Qualcomm have been fighting over patents and licensing since January 2017, when Apple filed suit against Qualcomm for roughly $1 billion, saying the maker of wireless chips didn’t give fair licensing terms for its technology. Apple wants to pay a lower amount for using Qualcomm technology in its devices. Qualcomm, the world’s biggest provider of mobile chips, responded by suing Apple for patent infringement and seeking a ban on iPhone sales. The company maintains that no modern handset — including the iPhone — would’ve been possible without its cellular technologies. The US isn’t the first court to recommend banning iPhones for infringing Qualcomm intellectual property. In early December, a Chinese court ordered four of Apple’s Chinese subsidiaries to stop importing or selling iPhones because of patent infringement. Later that same month, a court in Munich found that Apple infringed Qualcomm’s technology for power savings in smartphones and ruled that the iPhone maker must halt sales of the device in Germany. In late 2017, in the case that Judge Pender is overseeing, Qualcomm asked the ITC to ban the import and sale of certain iPhones that use Intel’s 4G modem. Those would’ve included the iPhone X, 8, 8 Plus, 7 and 7 Plus that run on AT&T and T-Mobile. The phones that run on networks from Verizon and Sprint use Qualcomm’s modem and wouldn’t have been included in the ban.In that case, Qualcomm initially asserted 88 claims from six patents. The ITC’s decision from September upheld only one claim from one patent. Tuesday’s decision invalidated that single claim. Duking it out in courtEarlier this month, a jury in San Diego determined that Apple violated three Qualcomm patents and should pay the chipmaker $31 million for infringing on its technology. Qualcomm had alleged that Apple used its technology without permission in some versions of the iPhone. The jury awarded Qualcomm the full amount it had requested at the start of the two-week trial. The companies next face off on April 15 for a trial over Qualcomm’s licensing practices. Because Qualcomm owns patents related to 3G, 4G and 5G phones — as well as other features like software — any handset maker building a device that connects to the networks has to pay a licensing fee, even if it doesn’t use Qualcomm’s chips. Apple and the companies that build its phones, like Foxconn, don’t believe Qualcomm charges a fair rate. That trial, also in San Diego, will last 20 days before being handed to the jury. At the same time, Qualcomm is waiting for a judge’s decision in a US Federal Trade Commission lawsuit that argued the chipmaker is a monopoly. The FTC two years ago accused Qualcomm of forcing customers like Apple to work with it exclusively and charging excessive licensing fees for its technology. Because of the legal disputes, Apple has moved away from using Qualcomm modems in its devices. Its newest phones, the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR, use only Intel 4G chips.Originally published March 26, 11:25 a.m. PT.Updates, 12:02 p.m.: Adds Qualcomm statement; 2:24 p.m.: Includes second ITC case ruling; 3:49 p.m.: Adds Apple comment; 11:46 p.m.: Includes additional details and Qualcomm statement on the second ruling. It then can be examined by President Donald Trump. Qualcomm welcomed the news in the first case.”We appreciate Judge McNamara’s recognition of Apple’s infringement of our hardware patent and that she will be recommending an import ban and cease and desist order,” Don Rosenberg, Qualcomm general counsel, said in a statement. It said in a press release that “the Commission’s decision is inconsistent with the recent unanimous jury verdict finding infringement of the same patent after Apple abandoned its invalidity defense at the end of trial. We will seek reconsideration by the Commission in view of the jury verdict.”Apple, meanwhile, said in a statement that “We’re pleased the ITC has found Qualcomm’s latest patent claims invalid. It’s another important step to making sure American companies are able to compete fairly in the marketplace.” The company called Qualcomm’s ITC case an effort “to distract from having to answer for the real issues, their monopolistic business practices.” It added that “we look forward to detailing the many ways they’re harming consumers and stifling innovation when we present our case in San Diego next month.” Review • iPhone XS review, updated: A few luxury upgrades over the XR $999 See it Preview • iPhone XS is the new $1,000 iPhone X Comments Phones Components Tech Industry Aug 31 • Best places to sell your used electronics in 2019 Apple iPhone XS See It Aug 31 • iPhone XR vs. iPhone 8 Plus: Which iPhone should you buy? Here’s how to clean it Apple and Qualcomm have been battling over patents and licensing.  Sarah Tew/CNET The International Trade Commission on Tuesday handed down two rulings in Apple and Qualcomm’s battle over patents. One found in favor of Qualcomm while the other sided with Apple. In one case, a judge said Apple’s iPhones have infringed a Qualcomm patent and should be banned from sale. But a full commission review in a second, separate case said Apple didn’t infringe Qualcomm patents and dismissed that suit. It also said it found that Qualcomm’s patents aren’t valid. In the first findings published Tuesday, Administrative Law Judge MaryJoan McNamara, in an initial determination, said Apple has infringed claim one of Qualcomm’s US Patent No. 8,063,674, which relates to power management in computing devices. The technology improves the performance of the power on/off on a device’s control network and processor while also reducing power consumption and improving battery life. Qualcomm accused Apple’s A10, A11 and A12 chips, which act as the brains of the iPhone 7 to the iPhone XS, of infringement. Because of that infringement, McNamara wrote, she plans to recommend that iPhones should be banned from sale in the US. She found that Apple didn’t infringe other patents asserted by Qualcomm and said some of Qualcomm’s patent claims are invalid.
